Back in 1957, Ilario Barbanti, owner of a sale-and-repair shop for electrical equipment, tired of repairing iron power cables, which would constantly wear out and fall apart through continuous use in laundries, determined to find a solution to that problem. He shortly invented a simple and handy device, consisting of a slanting stand for two irons, where the irons, properly modified, were powered simply resting on the support itself. The invention was immediately called, informally, “Coppia” [Pair]. While the operator was using one iron, which was cordless and therefore very handy, the other iron was warming up on the support; as soon as the temperature of the operated iron lowered, this was replaced by the other one, thus eliminating all the typical inconveniences of traditional irons and the related waste of time.
The invention proved right and immediately turned out a big success, becoming popular all over Italy. Suffice it to say that 70% of the laundries in Rome used the “Coppia”.
The invention of steam irons entailed the decline of the “Coppia”, but the contacts established with thousands laundries and ironing plants all over the country proved fruitful and encouraged Ilario Barbanti to close his shop and establish a company aiming at a more substantial presence in the laundry and ironing sectors. His two sons’ contribution gave new life to the company, which was expanding its field of action, for example with the participation to the Milan trade fair already in 1966.
In 1970, the decision to concentrate on high-level products brought the Barbanti brothers to a separation; the company Barbanti Carlo was thus established and started producing and marketing machines under its own trademark, achieving very high specialization levels in the finishing market. In 1980, the company moved from Mirandola to San Giacomo Roncole, where, operating on an area of 1.700 square metres, Carlo Barbanti, besides managing the ordinary production of steam generators and ironing tables, took great pleasure in designing and manufacturing more and more innovative machines.
The more and more demanding requirements from a market in constant evolution led to the creation of model “Maxi 90”, a unique form finisher at the time: besides the functions of common models with pneumatic sleeve tension, it offered some big advantages, such as automatic detection of garment height and garment clamping and tensioning in all key positions; moreover, all functions were pneumatic and adjustable, and times and pressures could be pre-set, which was a real innovation.
Thanks to this new model, Barbanti was introduced to a big foreign company and started manufacturing several machines for them, on a worldwide exclusive basis.
Barbanti premises became inadequate shortly afterwards and were enlarged.
The constant research and technological innovation have resulted in the attainment of several national and international patents, allowing the company to claim a more and more relevant position in the market.
An important innovation, which gave further impetus to the company, was represented by the
Shirt Finisher, designed and produced in 1992. That machine changed completely the concept of shirt finishing. Nowadays, after over twenty years predominance, the Shirt Finisher is still undergoing some improvements, determined by real needs and made possible by years of experience.
Barbanti have strengthened over the years the values upon which they have built their reputation, i.e. quality, reliability and technological innovation, thus widening their business area all over the world.
Unfortunately, a violent earthquake struck Emilia Romagna in May 2012; the Barbanti factory was seriously damaged and declared unfit for use and irreparable. The Barbanti family did not surrender and, making a big effort, moved the production department temporarily to Sala Bolognese within less than a month. Only eleven months later, the company moved back to Mirandola, in a new, completely rebuilt building.
Barbanti is a family enterprise with over 40 years consolidated experience in the design and production of top-quality industrial finishing equipment. The company is currently operating in an over 5,000 m² large building, equipped with a showroom where all the machines are available for customers’ tests, to allow them to choose the most suitable products for their needs.
